Saturday, July 27, 2013 - Mother's Morning Out
I love all the events CHOA's Sibley Heart Center's - Kids at Heart program hosts for their cardiac families but this event was very special.
Mother's Morning Out was an invitation only opportunity to spend the day with other Heart Moms and female caregivers. We shared our experiences and bonded in the strength of our children's journeys.
All of the stories of strength and survival were so inspirational. A few of the Heart Heroes endured a heart transplant and many near death experiences before their twenty-first birthday. One of the mother's is expecting her first child whom was diagnosed with a CHD at her 20 week ultrasound. I even met another mom who has two daughters born with a CHD now living active, healthy lives.
I was the only heart-mom at this event who experienced losing a child with a CHD and when I shared my story, the room was filled with tears. I felt horrible! We came together to have a good time and here I come raining on the parade. Jia's story bought the sunshine back but the reality is, all of the moms could relate to my experience and live in fear for their heart heroes everyday. It really felt good to spend some quality time with other moms that speak my language.
After sharing our experiences, we enjoyed brunch and a little art therapy. Like many of the other heart-moms, I haven't painted in years but I really enjoyed the break from my family.
I truly appreciate CHOA for all they do. They not only take care of their patients but they care for the families as well. I look forward to future events and keeping in touch with all the heart moms I meet along the way.
